Kerr Lake Regional Water System

Here's where I spend a good deal of my time. This is the control panel.. Where I can monitor flows, Control pumps, Open and close valves and generally keep an eye on what's going on in the system. KLRWS just recently installed a SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system. this replaced about 20 old analog monitors.. Making life a little easier.
These are the "high service" pumps. The one in the foreground has a 400 HP motor.. It'll pump about 5 million gallons a day. The middle pump is a 700 HP motor.. It can put out about 7 million gallons a day. The far pump is a 900 HP unit.. We can get about 10 million gallons a day out of it. You can see a chair at the base of the 900 HP pump.. That'll give you an idea of the size of these things!
This is a small part of the lab. Our water is monitored for quality 24 hours a day.. 7 days a week. Each stage of the process is closely monitored to assure a quality product. Among other things.. We test for bacteria, metals and minerals. The chlorine dosages, Fluoride, pH and turbidity are also monitored constantly. The criteria for water quality is governed by local, State and federal authorities. Detailed reports are sent to them each month.

If you've never thought about where your water comes from.. And the process that it goes through to get to you.. You should. Pollutants and chemical spills make the news. But it's all the little things.. The stuff that you spray on the lawn.. That little dab of oil or anti-freeze that soaks into the ground. Essentially everything that goes into the ground.. Gets into the water eventually. So.. Be nice to mother nature.. And make my job a little easier!

Have a question about water? Send me a note and I'll do my best to answer it for you!
